Backup Power for Small Businesses: Keep Working During a Blackout

For a small business, a power outage means more than inconvenience. It can mean lost sales, spoiled stock and data problems. A battery backup can keep the essentials running.

Step 1: Decide what must keep running

  • Payments: card terminal, POS system, till
  • Connectivity: router, modem, phone system
  • Refrigeration: fridges and freezers with stock
  • Security: alarm system, cameras, access control
  • Workstations: a laptop or computer to keep serving customers
  • Lighting: a few LED lights for safe operation

Step 2: Estimate power and energy

Device Typical power
Card terminal + router 20–40 W
POS computer 50–150 W
Security cameras (4) + recorder 40–60 W
Commercial fridge 150–400 W running
LED lighting (6 bulbs) 50–60 W

Multiply each by the hours needed, add them up, and divide by 0.85 for losses. Four hours of a till, router, cameras and lights could need around 1–1.5 kWh. Adding refrigeration can double or triple that.

Step 3: Choose the right setup

  • Small shop or office: a 1–2 kWh power station can keep payments, internet and lights running
  • Cafés and food shops: a larger, expandable battery with enough output for fridges and freezers
  • Longer outages: add solar panels to recharge during the day

Step 4: Plan the practical details

  • Place the battery near the essential equipment, in a ventilated, dry space.
  • Label which devices go on backup power.
  • Test the setup every few months.
  • For permanent connection to your electrical system, use a qualified electrician.

Important note

For critical systems such as servers, medical equipment or large refrigeration, speak with a specialist about professional UPS or backup systems designed for your needs.

FAQ

Does a battery switch on automatically?

Some units offer pass-through or UPS modes. Check the switchover time for sensitive equipment.

Is it noisy like a generator?

No. Batteries are silent and produce no fumes, so they can be used indoors.
