The BYD Atto 3 is a family SUV that many owners charge almost entirely at home. Getting the right home charger is simple once you know the one number that matters: European Atto 3 models accept up to 11 kW of three-phase AC charging.
Which charger for the Atto 3?
| Your home supply | Charger to buy | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Three-phase (most houses in Estonia) | WallBox S2 11 kW | Matches the car's maximum AC speed |
| Single-phase | WallBox S2 7 kW | The most a single-phase supply can deliver |
| Shared parking, several EVs | WallBox S2 Pro 22 kW | Only if other cars can use 22 kW |
Specifications can differ between model years and markets. If your Atto 3 was imported from outside Europe, check its manual: some non-European versions charge on AC at around 7 kW only.
How long does the Atto 3 take to charge?
Approximate times with the larger 60 kWh-class battery, from 20% to 100%:
| Charger | Time |
|---|---|
| Household socket (2.3 kW) | About 23 hours |
| 7 kW wall box | About 7.5 hours |
| 11 kW wall box | About 5 hours |
A typical 40–50 km commute uses around 7–9 kWh in an SUV of this size, which an 11 kW wall box replaces in under an hour.
Why not the household socket?
It works, and the portable cable is useful on trips. But a socket adds only about 12–15 km of range per hour, and household sockets are not designed for many hours of high current every night. For daily charging, a wall box on its own circuit is faster and safer. Have an electrician install it with the correct residual current protection.
Winter in Estonia
The Atto 3 uses BYD's Blade LFP battery. LFP charges more slowly when the battery is very cold, and the car may spend some energy warming it first. Charging at home overnight and scheduling the car to finish shortly before you leave means you start the day with a warm battery and a warm cabin. Preconditioning while still plugged in also saves range.
Charging to 100%
LFP batteries are comfortable being charged to 100%, and BYD recommends regular full charges so the car can keep its range estimate accurate. Check your owner's manual for the exact advice for your car.
The cable to keep in the boot
Many public AC chargers have a Type 2 socket without a cable. A Type 2 to Type 2 cable rated 22 kW works with the Atto 3 and any future EV you buy.
FAQ
Does a 22 kW charger charge the Atto 3 faster?
No. The car takes up to 11 kW from any AC charger.
What is the DC rapid charging speed?
Around 80–88 kW for European versions with the larger battery, at CCS2 rapid chargers. That is for longer journeys; home charging is AC.
Can the Atto 3 power appliances?
Yes, it supports vehicle-to-load (V2L) with the right adapter.
