The Tesla Model 3 and Model Y are the most common electric cars in Estonia, and one of the first questions new owners ask is: do I need Tesla's own Wall Connector, or will another charger work? The short answer: any certified Type 2 wall box works, and it charges the car just as fast.
Why any Type 2 charger works
Teslas sold in Europe have the same Type 2 charging port as every other European electric car. Home charging is standardised: the wall box and the car talk to each other using the same European protocol, whatever the brand. There is nothing Tesla-specific about charging at home.
How fast does a Model 3 or Model Y charge at home?
European Model 3 and Model Y versions accept up to 11 kW on AC, on a three-phase supply. That is the car's limit, so a bigger charger does not help.
| Your home supply | Charger to choose | Charging speed |
|---|---|---|
| Three-phase (most houses in Estonia) | 11 kW | Full speed: about 50–60 km of range per hour |
| Single-phase | 7 kW | About 35–40 km of range per hour |
| Three-phase, but other EVs at home that accept 22 kW | 22 kW | The Tesla still charges at 11 kW |
With 11 kW, a Model 3 or Model Y that arrives home at 20% is full well before morning.
Tesla Wall Connector or another brand?
- Charging speed: the same. Both deliver up to 11 kW to a Model 3 or Y.
- Scheduling: you can set charging times either in the Tesla app or in the wall box app, so both can charge in the cheapest night hours.
- Other cars: a standard Type 2 wall box works just as well with the next car you buy, whatever the brand, and with visitors' cars.
- Price: compare the complete price including installation.
Model S and Model X
Newer Model S and Model X versions also charge at up to 11 kW on AC. Some older versions had larger onboard chargers (up to 16.5 or 22 kW). If you have an older S or X, check your car's specifications; a 22 kW wall box gets the most from those versions.
Charging to 80% or 100%?
Follow the recommendation shown in your car. Teslas with an LFP battery (many Standard Range and rear-wheel-drive versions) recommend charging to 100% regularly; versions with other batteries usually recommend about 80–90% for daily use. The car tells you which it is in the charging screen.
Installation
A wall box must be installed by a qualified electrician on its own circuit with the correct protection. Your electrician will check your main fuse and whether the house can take the extra load.
FAQ
Do I need an adapter?
No. European Teslas use Type 2, the same plug as the wall box cable.
Will it work with Tesla's scheduled charging?
Yes. Leave the wall box ready to charge and set the times in the Tesla app, or schedule in the wall box app instead.
Can I use the charger for a second, non-Tesla car?
Yes. Any European EV with a Type 2 port charges on the same wall box.
Complete your setup
- Your wall box: the one recommended above. Not sure about your home's power supply? Find Your Charger checks your car and your home together.
- A portable charger for the boot: a must-have for every EV owner, so you are never stuck without a way to charge. The 3.5 kW portable charger plugs into any household socket.
- A Type 2 cable for public chargers: many public AC chargers have no cable of their own. Our 22 kW Type 2 cable (5 m) fits every car with a Type 2 port.
