Good news: washing an electric car is not very different from washing any other car. EVs are designed to be driven in rain and washed normally. But a few details are worth knowing.
Before you start
- Never wash the car while it's charging. Unplug first.
- Make sure the charging port flap is fully closed.
- Check your manual for a car wash mode. Some EVs need it to stop automatic locking, the parking brake or sensors from activating.
The charging port
The port is sealed when closed, so normal washing is fine. Just avoid aiming a pressure washer directly at the port area from close range. To clean the port itself, use a dry soft brush or cloth, never water or liquid cleaners.
Wheels and brakes
EVs use regenerative braking, so the friction brakes are used less. That means less brake dust, but it can also allow rust to build up on brake discs. Use the friction brakes firmly now and then, where it's safe, to keep them clean.
- Use a pH-neutral wheel cleaner and soft wheel brushes.
- Clean wheels first, with separate brushes and mitts, so grit doesn't reach the paint.
Tyres
EVs are heavier and deliver instant torque, which can increase tyre wear. Use washing time to check tread depth and pressure.
Underbody
The high-voltage battery is sealed and protected, and rinsing the underbody to remove road salt in winter is good practice. Use moderate pressure and keep a reasonable distance rather than blasting components up close.
Automatic car washes
Most EVs can use automatic car washes. Activate car wash mode if your car has one, fold the mirrors if recommended, and follow the car wash's instructions for EVs.
