I Just Bought an EV. Which Home Charger Do I Need? Quick Answers by Car Model

You bought an electric car, new or used, and now you need a way to charge it at home. Here are short answers for the cars you see most on Estonian roads. Find your car, and you have your charger.

Two questions decide everything: how fast your car can charge on AC, and whether your home has single-phase or three-phase power. Prefer to click instead of read? Find Your Charger asks both and shows you the one to buy.

The short rule

Tesla

I bought a Tesla Model 3 or Model Y. Which charger do I need? Both charge at up to 11 kW. With three-phase power, choose an 11 kW wall box. You do not need a Tesla Wall Connector: any Type 2 wall box works. Read more in our Tesla Model 3 and Model Y guide.

And a Tesla Model S or Model X? Cars from 2021 charge at 11 kW, so an 11 kW wall box is right. Cars from 2016–2020 can take 16.5 kW, so they charge faster on a 22 kW wall box if your home has a three-phase 3×32 A supply.

BYD

I bought a BYD Dolphin. Which charger should I buy? It depends on the battery. The Dolphin Comfort and Design (60 kWh) charge at 11 kW: choose an 11 kW wall box. The Dolphin Active and Boost (44.9 kWh) charge on one phase at up to 7 kW: choose a 7 kW wall box. Not sure which one you have? Email us and we will check. Full details: BYD Dolphin guide.

BYD Dolphin Surf, Atto 2, Atto 3, Seal, Sealion 7 or Seal U DM-i? All charge at 11 kW: choose an 11 kW wall box. Guides: Dolphin Surf, Atto 2, Atto 3, Seal, Sealion 7.

BYD Atto 2 DM-i (plug-in hybrid)? It charges on one phase at 3.3–6.6 kW: choose a 7 kW wall box.

Hyundai and Kia

Hyundai Ioniq 5, Ioniq 6 or Kona Electric (2021 and newer)? 11 kW wall box.

Hyundai Kona Electric 2018–2020 or Ioniq Electric? These charge on one phase at 7.2 kW: 7 kW wall box.

Kia EV3, EV6, EV9 or Niro EV (2022 and newer)? 11 kW wall box. See the Kia EV3 guide.

Kia e-Niro 2019–2021? One phase at 7.2 kW: 7 kW wall box.

Toyota

I bought a Toyota bZ4X. 7 kW or 11 kW? It depends on the year. From 2025 the bZ4X charges at 11 kW: choose an 11 kW wall box. The 2022–2024 cars come with a 6.6 kW one-phase charger as standard: choose a 7 kW wall box, unless your car was ordered with the 11 kW option. The same goes for the Subaru Solterra. Details: Toyota bZ4X guide.

Škoda, Volkswagen and Audi

Škoda Enyaq or Elroq, VW ID.3, ID.4 or ID.7, Audi Q4 e-tron? All charge at 11 kW: 11 kW wall box. See the Škoda Enyaq and Elroq guide.

VW e-Golf? One phase at 7.2 kW: 7 kW wall box.

Audi e-tron, Q8 e-tron or Porsche Taycan? 11 kW as standard: 11 kW wall box. If your car was ordered with the 22 kW charging option, a 22 kW wall box charges it faster.

Nissan and Mitsubishi

Nissan Leaf, 2018 and newer? It has a Type 2 port and charges on one phase at up to 6.6 kW: choose a 7 kW wall box.

Nissan Leaf 2011–2017 or Mitsubishi i-MiEV? These cars have a Type 1 port. Our chargers have a Type 2 plug, so they need a Type 2 to Type 1 adapter, which we do not stock at the moment. Email us your model before you order and we will tell you honestly what fits.

Nissan Ariya? 7.4 kW on one phase as standard: 7 kW wall box. Cars with the 22 kW option charge faster on a 22 kW wall box.

BMW, Mercedes, Volvo and Polestar

BMW iX, i4, i5 or iX1, Mercedes EQA, EQB, EQE or EQS, Volvo EX30, XC40 or EX40, Polestar 2? All charge at 11 kW: 11 kW wall box.

BMW i3 or Mercedes EQC? Early cars charge on one phase at 7.4 kW, later ones at 11 kW. Email us the year and we will tell you which one to choose.

Renault, Dacia, MG and others

Renault Zoe? One of the few cars that takes 22 kW: a 22 kW wall box if your home has a three-phase 3×32 A supply, otherwise 11 kW.

Renault Megane E-Tech? The 60 kWh version takes 22 kW, the 40 kWh version charges on one phase at 7.4 kW. Renault 5 and Renault 4: 11 kW.

Dacia Spring? One phase: 7 kW wall box.

MG4 or MG S5? 6.6 kW on one phase or 11 kW, depending on the version. Email us your version.

ORA 03 (Funky Cat), Ford Mustang Mach-E, Explorer or Capri? 11 kW wall box.

A plug-in hybrid of any brand? Almost all charge on one phase at 3.7–7.4 kW: a 7 kW wall box or a portable charger is enough.

Questions that come up next

How do I know if my home has single-phase or three-phase power?

Most houses in Estonia have three-phase power. Many apartments and older homes have single-phase. Your main fuse tells you: three fuses side by side (for example 3×16 A or 3×25 A) means three-phase. If you are not sure, ask your electrician, or choose "I am not sure" in Find Your Charger.

Should I buy 22 kW to be safe?

Usually not. Most cars cannot charge faster than 11 kW on AC, so a 22 kW wall box charges them at exactly the same speed and costs more.

Why does my car charge slower than the charger's rating?

The car sets the speed, not the charger. A car that charges on one phase gets about 3.7 kW from an 11 kW three-phase wall box, which is why we recommend the 7 kW version for those cars.

I live in an apartment or rent my home. What can I do?

Use a portable charger. The 3.5 kW portable charger plugs into a normal household socket and adds about 15–20 km of range per hour. Nothing to install, and it moves with you.

What else do I need?

A portable charger for the boot, so you are never stuck without a way to charge, and a Type 2 cable for public AC chargers that have no cable of their own.
